WHAT IS ADVOCACY?

To advocate for the profession of Interior Design, is to advocate for the value of interior design and its impact.

Every IIDA Chapter, including Wisconsin, has an Advocacy Committee whose goal is to protect existing legislation and pass legislation benefiting the Interior Design Profession and public. Additionally, it provides resources related to legislation, shares information about the NCIDQ, promotes information on becoming a Wisconsin Registered Interior Designer in the State of Wisconsin, and highlights how current legislation affects the profession.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE?

  1. Pass and maintain legislation.

  2. Provide members CEUs focused on building codes and the health, safety and welfare in collaboration with professional development.

  3. Educate students, emerging professionals and NCIDQ certificate holders on the importance, pathway, and responsibilities of Wisconsin Registered Interior Designers.

WHAT IS A WISCONSIN REGISTERED INTERIOR DESIGNER (WRID)?

Upon passing the National Certification of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exams, an interior designer may apply to become a Registered Interior Designer (RID).

Applications are available at the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) #2219, Interior Designer Registration Application Information. The appellation of WRID applies to individual interior designers who are state-registered and authorized to use the protected professional title. Given the 2021 Wisconsin ACT 195, WRID’s may order a stamp to submit work as outlined in the scope of 2021 Wisconsin Act 195 (000001.ildoc).

Additionally, WRIDs must maintain 15 Health, Safety, and Welfare CEUs every two (2) years and may be required to submit proof at time of renewal.

WHY SHOULD I BECOME A REGISTERED INTERIOR DESIGNER?

  • Enhances marketability by setting a standard of expertise, which may attract clients or enhance entrepreneurship goals.

  • Career advancement

  • Contractual fulfillment and leverage since WRIDs may file a lien against property owners for non-payment.

  • Bolsters the advancement and strengthens the profession for advancement and legislative support.

  • Shows interior designers are credentialed design professionals on par with architects, landscape architects, and engineers for their specific area of expertise.

  • The option to obtain a seal to authenticate interior, non-structural drawings as defined under 2021 Wisconsin Act 195.

  • Shows consumers and clients you have the education, experience, and examination necessary to be a professional interior designer.

WHAT IS 2021 WISCONSIN ACT 195?

On March 18, 2022, Governor Evers signed into law an act enabling Wisconsin Registered Interior Designers to stamp and seal their own drawings for permitting under a defined scope. Previously, WRIDs held a title act, which was signed into law on May 2nd, 1996.

Additionally, the Act created the Interior Design Section under the A-E Board at the Department of Safety and Professional Services. The goal of the Interior Design Section is to uphold standards, and set the rules and regulations for WRIDs.

WHY DOES INTERIOR DESIGN LEGISLATION MATTER?

Interior design legislation establishes professional standards to protect the public. IIDA-WI believes legal recognition brings uniformity, defines responsibility, and promotes excellence. Visit the IIDA Guide to see where interior designers have practice rights.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT DESIGN LAW IN WI?

Wisconsin Registered Interior Designers have the right to stamp and seal their non-structural, non-exterior permitting, construction documents. The 2021 Wisconsin Act 195 provides WRID’s with stamp and seal provisions, defines the scope of interior design, and removes several barriers to voluntary registration.

Since legislation has taken effect, we have found a discrepancy in the interpretation of the verbiage within the law to date to allow WRID’s to see their project through to completion.

The IIDA WI chapter in partnership with ASID WI and the Consortium of Interior Design, are actively working behind the scenes with our lobbyist to remedy the error.
