IIDA WI Student Essay Competition 2021

The deadline for competition entry is January 31, 2021.  There is no cost for submission, but each student must be an IIDA member and be pursuing a degree in Interior Design within the state of Wisconsin. If you are not a member, you may apply for membership before submissions are due on January 31, 2021 and still be accepted as a valid member. All final essay submissions must be uploaded on the form below by end of day on January 31, 2021. For any technical issues with information submission or payments, please contact [email protected].

judging criteria

  1. Inclusion of all components with the submission (Executive summary and Firm/Designer Qualifications)
  2. How well are the design elements articulated, did it create a mental image of the solution?
  3. Were the client problems and mission addressed in the summary?
  4. Clear formatting and organization of the essay
    1. Appropriate writing style and grammar
    2. Was the firm description clear and concise?
  5. Note: Inclusion of student name in the essay is automatic disqualification.

Conveying concepts and ideas through the written word is an especially important skill for every interior designer.  The focus of this award is to demonstrate your ability to articulate design ideas, concepts, and qualifications through your writing.  Please include the following elements in your essay submission of 500 words or less to be considered for the $1000 scholarship:

Smallville University is a large private college system in the mid-west looking to improve the education experience for their students and upgrade their classrooms and common spaces for better learning and engagement.  Smallville University is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive campus as well as supporting sustainability and wellbeing initiatives for their spaces.  They have numerous existing buildings that range from new construction to 100-year-old facilities where they would like to implement these new design strategies.  They are looking for a design firm to help them create a plan to renovate the classrooms and common spaces to meet their learning, diversity, inclusion, well-being, and sustainability goals.  They want to market the new spaces to their prospective students in hopes of increasing enrollment and expanding many of their programs.  The design solution shall also incorporate the schools branding and graphic standards. 

The following spaces shall be included in the scope of this project:

  • Common spaces: Lounge areas, quiet area study rooms & huddle spaces for small study group meetings
  • Classrooms: large lecture halls and smaller classrooms


Your Design Proposal should include:

  • Executive summary outlining design concepts for common spaces & classrooms to include branding and graphic solutions
  • Introduction of your firm to include your experience & capabilities – (do not include the student’s name in the text of the submission)
