Career Day 2018, themed “It Starts with Us”, certainly showed students that on Friday, March 2nd at Madison College. Changing up the venue from years past allowed students to explore a new campus and gain inspiration.

Participation hovered near 160 people, including faculty members, design professionals, industry vendors, esteemed speakers and dedicated volunteers. After students snagged their swag bag full of industry goodies, IIDA and ASID WI Chapter Presidents spoke on the importance of belonging to a professional organization.

For many, keynote speaker Joe Lawniczak was the highlight of the day; delivering an empowering message to follow your path because you never know what it may bring. Joe educates Main Street stakeholders throughout Wisconsin about the values of historic preservation, adaptive re-use, and design through implementation of local preservation and design review guidelines and ordinances. Equipped with hand rendering examples and several key life lessons, Joe showed his passion and connected with all the creative talent in the audience.

Other valuable sessions included “progression of design”, a session where both commercial and residential designers gave real life examples of a well crafted project. Building tours, vendor fair, commercial and residential panels, and free professional headshots made for a well rounded day. Career Day is a “not to miss’ event for interior design students looking to enhance skills, knowledge and building their network.
